Man in US detained for allegedly planning attacks on US senators
India is trying to track down a man who allegedly planned attacks on the US senators and their staff, according to US officials.
Manu Thakur, 22, was arrested on Friday on charges of preparing to commit a terrorist act, US officials said.
He was arrested at a transit point in New York’s Chelsea neighbourhood on suspicion of trying to commit terrorist acts in the United States and the United Kingdom, the officials said in a statement.
It was not immediately clear whether Thakurs family had been notified.
Thakur is a resident of the US and was born in India, according a statement from the New York Police Department.
Thaksur was charged on Wednesday with trying to use force against US citizens.
The New York City Department of Investigation said it had received a tip about the case from India, where Thakul lives.
It did not provide further details about the alleged plot.
ThAKUR IS THE FIRST US Citizen Arrested in IndiaSince February, an unknown number of people have been arrested in the US in connection with plots to carry out terror attacks against US allies, officials have said.
The arrests come as Indian authorities have become more concerned about homegrown terrorism, with the US National Counter Terrorism Centre saying the number of homegrown terrorism-related arrests in the country rose more than 400 percent in the past three years to 4,921.
